Russian foreign minister hopes U.S.-Russia relations to become normal

Moscow hopes that its relations with Washington will be mended and become normal in the wake of the U.S. presidential election, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Nov. 10.

He recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin commented on the U.S. election speaking at the ceremony of presenting credentials in the Kremlin on Nov. 9. "We respect the American people’s choice, we are open to cooperation with the new president, as would be the case irrespective of the results of the election," he said.

"We hope that relations between Russia and the U.S., which are currently not at their best, will be mended and become normal, which meets the interests of our peoples and the entire international community," Lavrov stressed.

Speaking about the legal aspect of the election, the minister noted that "the U.S. has obligations towards the OSCE with respect to organizing election monitoring by foreign observers." "Such monitoring was organized," he said. "Despite a number of critical comments, it was recognized that the election conforms to all existing standards."
